A CBD office tower engages thousands of people 7 days a week, 24 hours a day - in its design, build, fit-out, operation and management.  Individuals continue to contribute to its very existence, vibrancy and value over the lifetime of the property.

Australia’s CBDs are home to hundreds of office towers - they form the basis of value creation for millions of people.

Never has the demand for change and evolution of ‘built form’ been greater as governments, organisations, businesses and individuals race to keep pace with the demands of living and working in a sustainable tech-driven world.  

As our community adapts to new ways of working and innovates to address carbon emissions and embraces the impact of technology, there are numerous questions to ponder:

  • What purpose will CBD office towers serve in 2030 and beyond?
  • How will businesses use commercial space?
  • What will employees expect from future workspaces?
  • What will be required to attract tenants into the CBD?
  • What role will technology play in future workspaces?
  • What ESG obligations will impact what will constitute an acceptable workspace in the future?
  • How do we enable and ensure greater flexibility in all aspects of commercial property to enable buildings to flex as future needs change the use of space?

This Innovation Challenge brings together representatives across the ecosystem, providing a unique opportunity to collaborate and develop practical, scalable, implementable solutions from architecture, technology, design, leasing, sustainability, people management and many more, that enable us all to adapt and flex to support the future of work.

Thursday 28th July - Challenge Day

  • 8.30 am AEST: Participant check-in with teams and facilitators
  • 9.00 - 9.30 am AEST: Welcome and Opening Keynote
  • 9.30 am - 5.30 pm AEST: 3 x Design Sprints with Teams
  • 5.35 - 6.30 pm AEST: Business Networking Event (invitation only)

Thursday 29th July - Pitching and Judging

  • 9:30 - 9:45 am AEST: Welcome and Opening
  • 9:45 - 4:00 pm AEST: Team Pitches*
  • 4:00 - 4:30 pm AEST: Judging Deliberation
  • 4:30 - 5:00 pm AEST: Awards Ceremony and Close

*The team pitches and judging will take place virtually on Friday 29th July from 9:30 am (exact times to be announced).

✋ How to Participate


You and your colleagues will be allocated to a team of approximately 10 people with relevant skills and qualifications to support your business. Your team's Paddl Facilitator will assist the team to ideate, innovate and create solutions. No prior experience is necessary, you will be fully supported by Paddl. Note: it is MANDATORY for you to connect with video and audio. Paddl will provide any technical assistance you require.

You will have the opportunity to introduce yourself and your business to others in your team and meet fellow teammates online. Your team Facilitator will be sharing the tools you need to have access to you and what the day will look like. Access to your Paddl Workspace, which has all the information you need and links to your team chat will be made available prior to the Challenge day.

What are the National Innovation Games?

The National Innovation Games is co-funded by the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources and is delivered by Paddl in partnership with the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia.

This is an Australian Government initiative to drive sustainability, innovation, digital skills, cross-functional industry collaboration and boost jobs.

Multi-disciplinary teams brainstorm and develop practical solutions for the participating businesses, pitching their ideas to a judging panel for prizes! Solutions must be practical, scalable and implementable.

Mentor Booth and Employer Booth

Book a 15-minute one-on-one Mentor Booth with an industry professional or a session with a potential Employer about a graduate role. Details will be shared closer to the date.
